Taking climate actions: Malawi

In the week of October 2022, two climate action activities were carried out in Malawi. The first activity was a virtual meeting: Taking Climate Actions. Happy Mwabe, representative of Malawi, The POP Movement was invited by the African Climate Alliance to their webinar as one of  the guest panelists. He delivered a motivational talk to a group of climate activists in Southern Africa and encouraged them to consolidate climate actions.

The second project is an afforestation program. This is a project in which they are working with a  group of ten farmers to raise a tree nursery. The goal is to raise up to 10,000 tree seedlings and tube filling is at 100%. The objective of the project is to mount a forest on the degraded pieces of land in the community which will become a bee farm in the future.

Objectives attained: 

  • Capacity-built the young climate activists on their roles in climate space
  • Nurtured the enthusiasm and motivation in carrying out climate actions
  • Brought together the sparse activists giving them an opportunity of  exposure and networking

Afforestation project— Tree nursery raising

Place: Kambulaje Village, Senior Chief Mlomba, Machinga District,  Malawi.

Target group: Village farmers
Number of participants: 9 female, 3 male; 11 in total
Direct impacted population: 11; Indirect impacted population: 100

Objectives attained: 

  • Enhanced nature conservation practices in the farmers
  • Promoted climate-smart livelihoods
  • Reinforced the cohesion in the farmers groups by bringing them together for a common goal
