Activities

Given the slow pace of international negotiations and inadequate implementation of the Paris agreement on climate change, it is essential that grassroots actions are stepped up to ensure timely and adequate action by society. In this regard the youth of the world must take the lead, because it is their future which is at stake and more importantly their minds do not carry the inertia of adults.

It is absolutely essential to assert that the youth of the world have the potential to take the lead in the fight against climate change and foster a movement to meet the challenge.  It is of equal importance that one understands this to be a continuous process requiring substantial guidance and support from different members of society.

The POP Movement which truly believes in the action of youth “inspired by knowledge”, assesses this need and offers a wide range of mentorship and support, to young people, youth-led groups and others who are strongly inclined towards collectively acting on climate change and issues related to the environment.

Capacity Building

The POP Movement and those associated with it would:

  1. Impart knowledge of climate science and provide mentorship by renowned climate scientists and other experts.
  2. Stimulate youth-led processes of climate action by conducting trainings activities and workshops with youth to provide a space for them to identify and assess the existing gaps in society that compromise on local environmental causes, and set commitments by helping evolve possible course of actions.
  3. Enable groups to become sustainability champions and act on climate change through hands-on, project based learning.
  4. Mentor the process of developing executable action plans and planning for implementation.
  5. Engage in sustained online and offline interaction to provide inputs, receive feedback, and support with work planning, operationalizing plans, and following up on activities.
  6. Enhance the effectiveness of projects/ideas by introducing learning tools and help incorporating them into working processes.
  7. Link youth groups with funding opportunities, businesses, government and academic communities, to create opportunities for sustaining their activities and objectives.

Implementation

  1. Support implementation and monitor progress through hand-holding and mentorship at many levels.
  2. Analyze the qualitative and quantitative outputs/impacts of projects, and provide critical learning for further implementation
  3. Mobilize resources and identify opportunities to convert ideas and commitments into action.

Knowledge Sharing

Equip young people with knowledge on climate science and the politics surrounding it as it is the baseline for initiating any form of action.

  1. Offer communication support and amplify the efforts through online and offline knowledge exchange including documentation, developing newsletters, social media support and other communication tools.
  2. Facilitate cross learning through linkages with networking and knowledge exchange opportunities and platforms.
    • Connect youth with policy makers and business leaders through the World Sustainable Development Forum (WSDF).
    • Host POP Festivals to provide a platform for youth to showcase and share their work, network and learn from other young people representing different parts of the world, and continue to be inspired.
    • Connect groups with different regional and global platforms to not only enhance their learning and share innovation, but also to establish connections and foster networking and collaboration.

Advocacy

  1. Use cultural art forms like music to engage youth on mobilizing action towards Protecting Our Planet.
  2. Carry out advocacy with policy makers, business leaders and academia in different regions around the world for the cause of enabling youth to take the lead in efforts towards ameliorating the impacts of climate change.
