POP Ocean Initiative – 2021

POP Ocean is an innovative new model for ocean action that was first unveiled during the “Perils of Sea Level Rise” at the World Sustainable Development Forum in Durango, Mexico in March 2020. After a very successful first year of the POP Ocean initiative by The POP Movement, 2021 brings new opportunities to conserve and preserve the ocean while raising awareness on the importance of doing so. During 2020, POP Ocean held 28 sessions with 67 speakers and 12 dignitaries. The initiative had participants from over 65 countries and a reach of over five thousand.

In 2021, POP Ocean aims to have a reach of 100,000 in over 70 countries, while mentoring 30 projects and holding over 25 sessions. The main goal of the effort is to increase ocean literacy and promote youth-led ocean action through mentorship, workshops, and seminars.

Some of the upcoming projects are a tv show, a hackathon and innovation lab, leadership conversations, a second edition of youth-led ocean action workshops, and a blue conference to commemorate ocean action.

POP Ocean TV, in collaboration with EarthX TV, aims to increase literacy and advocacy on the protection of the ocean, while promoting practical solutions and action through the engagement of global youth and leaders, promoting intergenerational exchange.

The Innovation Lab will focus mainly on the use of technology applied to the protection of the ocean. It will encompass different activities and workshops to increase youth involvement in technology-based solutions focusing on ocean conservation. The Innovation Lab will be launched by a Hackathon where participants across the world will have the opportunity to devise innovative solutions to global challenges, while receiving mentorship from internationally recognized experts and institutions.

The Second Youth-Led Ocean Action and Advocacy workshop will take place during the second semester of the year and it will focus on mentoring youth who seek to execute projects and initiatives focused on ocean protection and conservation.

The POP Ocean initiative has been able to conduct successful projects and events, bringing together participants from all across the world and encouraging inter-generational dialogue and collaboration. Special events to share outcomes and key findings of the initiative will also take place throughout the year.

There are many exciting projects coming up! Stay tuned to apply for different opportunities to get involved in marine protection and conservation.
