At Umutu Mixed Secondary School, Delta State, Nigeria, 16 senior secondary school students took part in a tree care and maintenance training on 23 July 2026, learning why protecting newly planted trees is just as important as planting them.

Led by Kingsley Osajie, the session introduced students to practical tree maintenance practices, including regular watering, mulching, staking and clearing weeds around young trees. The training encouraged students to understand that meaningful environmental action does not end when a tree is planted—it requires continued care and responsibility to help it grow.

Aligned with SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), the activity strengthened students’ knowledge of environmental stewardship and contributed to the continued health of planted trees. The initiative reported a 100% survival rate of the planted trees, highlighting the value of sustained tree care and maintenance.
