On June 8, 2020, to celebrate World Ocean Day, the POP Movement hosted the POP Ocean Virtual Summit to celebrate voices and amplify advocacy for sustainable protection of marine biodiversity, bringing together global leaders, young ocean advocates and former heads of states, including several Patrons of the WSDF, to discuss, deliberate, and inspire action on the vast realm of marine conservation.

In three segments, the Summit addressed the importance of the ocean and the anthropogenic impact, the relationship between the health of the ocean and human health along with its linkages to climate change and the pandemic, and global economic implications of ocean acidification and sea level rise as well as the conceptualization of Blue Economy and Blue Ecology.

Through its success, the POP Ocean Virtual Summit has provided the needed fundamental thrust to the newly founded POP Ocean Initiative, as the POP Ocean Family gears to build a movement of youth for the sustainable protection of our ocean and marine biodiversity, through advocacy and mentorship of a new generation of Ocean Advocates.

Way forward – POP Ocean Literacy Mini Series!

As a next step, the POP Ocean Literacy Mini-Series will be launched focusing on Ocean Advocacy and Training for Youth. The primary objectives of the POP Ocean Mini-Series will be to promote 1) Ocean Literacy, 2) Action, 3) Build Community, 4) Support Advocacy, and 5) Be Inclusive. This initiative aligns with an important subset of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically, SDGs 13, 14 and 17, that is, climate action (SDG 13), life below water (SDG 14), and partnership for the goals (SDG 17), respectively, and the Ocean Decade objectives.
