SESSION: POPs RESULTS IN MÉXICO
This session seeks to showcase the different approaches to monitoring the Persistent Organic Compounds (POPs) in Mexico including matrices like breast milk, air, and water, and present studies that become scientific tools for decision making and for formulation or revisiting public policies in Mexico.
The Stockholm Convention provides a series of control measures on the production, import, disposal, use, and elimination of Persistent Organic Compounds (POPs), with the aim of protecting health and the environment. Mexico signed the agreement on May 23, 2001 and became the first country in Latin America to ratify this agreement which entered into force on May 17, 2004. POPs are toxic and bioaccumulative chemicals in organisms that cause adverse effects on human health and the environment. They are highly volatile (they disperse in the air /environment) and due to their persistence, they can travel long distances, before being redeposited.
