UN-WAAS Global Leadership Initiative: POP at the Youth Movements Workshop

May 11, 2020

Karis Mclntyre - Designing the youth program in GL21

Recognizing the crucial need to fill the current global leadership vacuum with multi-level leadership that is inspired by eminent values, visions and aspirations, the World Academy of Arts and Science (WAAS) organized an online workshop on Global Leadership on May 11, 2020, gathering leading members of youth movements around the world to examine what transformative changes will be required to address the complex socio-ecological challenges faced in today’s global society.

With participants comprising of sustainability and social justice activists from youth movements and organizations, the workshop was also envisioned to provide a strategic planning opportunity for youth leaders to discuss, debate and decide on what kind of contributions can be made in the upcoming two-day international congress on “Global Leadership in the 21st Century” organized by WAAS at UNOG in October 2020. Through plenary and breakout sessions, the workshop gathered perspectives on the kind of leadership needed to effect change and to address the existing inter-generational gap for long term strategic partnerships with young people. From democratizing leadership in all spheres to overcoming the neoliberal paradigm of contemporary times, the discussions brought out and highlighted wide-ranging issues voiced out by youth.

In addition to the participation of young leaders from the POP Movement, Fridays For Future and other organizations, the event was graced with the active engagement of Garry Jacobs, President & CEO, WAAS; Board of Directors, World University Consortium and Prof. Thomas Reuter, Chair, WAAS Civil Society and Youth Working Group.
