The Impacts of the Environment on Human Health: A Leadership Conversation with Dr. Kritika Jain and team

During the 44th leadership conversation as our tribute to the Late Chief Mentor, Dr. R.K. Pachauri, we had the privilege of hosting Dr. Kritika Jain, an exceptional public health expert from Australia, along with her team members, Sushma and Sushmita Paudel. When asked about their perspective on leadership, Dr. Kritika Jain emphasized the importance of understanding and supporting people to enhance their wellbeing and bridge communication gaps for effective leadership. Sushmita Paudel highlighted the significance of teamwork and assisting individuals in achieving their goals, stressing that success is often achieved through collaboration. Sushma Paudel emphasized that true leadership goes beyond superficial characteristics and lies in a person’s character and their ability to connect with and motivate others.

On being asked about the relationship between environmental protection and health. The guest speakers shed light on the profound impact of the environment on our well-being, stating that approximately 24% of deaths are related to environmental factors. Sushma Paudel highlighted the crucial role of the environment in providing our daily necessities, while Sushmita Paudel emphasized the hazards posed by workplace chemicals, emphasizing the close link between the environment and our health. Dr. Kritika Jain discussed the direct proportion between environmental and personal health, citing the example of bio enzymes as a means to reduce air and water pollution and replace harmful household chemicals. The speakers emphasized the need for collective action to address environmental issues and safeguard human health.

When asked how focusing on the relationship between the environment and health can inspire further action, the guest speakers provided insightful responses. Dr. Kritika Jain stressed the importance of awareness, education, and sharing knowledge about the impact of environmental issues on health. Building a personal connection and understanding “how does it personally matter to me?” was highlighted, along with the significance of collaboration between organizations. With a Postgraduate degree in Public Health from Torrens University, Sydney, and graduation from Rajasthan University of Health Sciences, Jaipur, she passionately addresses social determinants of health, aiming to improve overall well-being through the intricate link between human health and the environment. Dr. Jain’s commitment extends beyond public health, as she pioneers innovative household cleaning solutions from food waste, gaining international recognition. This idea earned her the prestigious Best Innovative Award and grant funding, empowering her to share expertise through peer-based learning initiatives. Guided by the belief in endless possibilities, Dr. Jain strives to foster environmental health and well-being.

Sushma Paudel, the aspiring biotechnologist with a knack for a Sustainable and environment friendly society! She is on a path to unite the power of biotechnology and the pursuit of sustainability. She believes that small acts of kindness can create a ripple effect of positivity. In the world of biotechnology, Sushma Paudel has been actively involved in scientific research, exploring and addressing pressing challenges like Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Her work has focused on improving healthcare, advancing sustainable practices, and contributing to the betterment of society. She is also deeply committed to community service and volunteering. She has actively participated in various initiatives like WeSOLE (We Save Our Loving Earth), lending their skills and expertise to support causes she believes in.

Sushmita Paudel is a passionate Biotechnology enthusiast with a strong commitment to making a positive impact in her field and beyond. She actively engages in various volunteer works, demonstrating her dedication to fostering growth and innovation in the biotechnology sector. Sushmita’s involvement in organizations such as the Biotechnology Society of Nepal (BSN), Nepal Journal of Biotechnology (NJB), Hult Prize On-campus program, and WeSOLE (We Save Our Loving Earth) showcases her drive to contribute to the betterment of society. With an unwavering belief in the power of self-discovery and purpose, Sushmita understands the importance of aligning personal aspirations with societal goals.
