On Wednesday October 9, 2019, POP leader, Jesus Humberto Fernandez Rodriguez joined a state forum in Sonora, Mexico called on “Sonora sin plástico” or “Sonora without Plastic”. The forum advocated for a new law which aims to reduce and, ultimately, eliminate plastic pollution in the state of Sonora. Jesus proposed that the state consider the use of bioplastic, which is he is actively researching, as an alternative. He explained that this would help to reduce plastic pollution and its associated harm. He also advocated for social participation by the people of Sonora inviting their engagement to reduce plastic use. Finally, he also emphasized the role of environmental education especially among youth to achieve the vision of “Sonora sin plástico”.
