Laying Out The Project Community-Led Afforestation Project in Limera, Machinga, Malawi.
August 25, 2023
Activity 2 of Tree Plantation Initiative: Happy Mbewe, the representative of the POP Movement in Malawi, successfully presented the Community-led Afforestation Project, focusing on the final target area of Limera in Machinga, Malawi. During the meeting, key stakeholders in attendance included traditional chiefs, representatives from youth organizations, women’s representatives, and custodians.
The outcomes of this activity were noteworthy as several key achievements were made. Firstly, groups were established to shoulder the responsibility of nurturing tree nurseries and ensuring the growth of vital tree seedlings. Additionally, suitable land was allocated for the afforestation project, providing a dedicated space for tree-planting efforts. Lastly, a well-thought-out one-month work plan was devised, setting a clear roadmap for the project’s successful execution.
By the last week of August 2023, a number of activities were completed including the project’s unveiling to all stakeholders across the three villages in the implementation area of Mataka. Here’s a summary of our achievements:
●Planned the establishment of three tree nurseries, each with a target of producing 5,000 tree seedlings, which adds up to a potential of 15,000 seedlings.
●Four pieces of land have been generously provided for the afforestation project.
●In each village, three dedicated groups have been formed to oversee and manage the tree nurseries.
Construction of nursery fences has commenced in one village, while the other villages are in the process of gathering the necessary resources. This progress signifies the commitment to promoting afforestation and environmental sustainability in the community.
