International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples: Interviews by POP Trainee Mentor
August 9, 2020
August 9, 2020, commemorated the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. Since 1982, the United Nations has recognized the different challenges facing the world’s indigenous communities, giving them a platform for their voices to be heard. However, there is still a long way to go. With indigenous communities having worked to keep the balance of the ecosystem for centuries as warriors of the environment, it is important to listen to them, learn from them and understand the difficulties they encounter in leading this fight and support them.
With this in mind, POP Trainee Mentor, Camila González Colistro interviewed a few indigenous communities from the Latin American regions including El Salvador, Ecuador, and México, intending to visualize the realities of the communities and amplify their voices in the specific context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The documentary published on the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples can be accessed here.
“To save our planet, we much work together.
And the first step to it is by listening, understanding, and learning from each other.”
– Camila González Colistro, POP Trainee Mentor
