Beach Clean-Up Drive at Vasai Beach, POP India
October 27, 2024

On October 27th, Sayan took part in a beach cleanup drive at Vasai Beach, organized by the POP Movement in partnership with EyeSea. During this early morning initiative, Sayan collected around 10 kg of waste, filling two bags with general waste, toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, plastics, footwear, thermocol, shampoo sachets, and bottle caps.
Later, Sayan visited Suruchi Beach, where a substantial amount of litter—such as toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes, bottles, thermocol, shampoo sachets, and sandals—was found. In contrast, Kalamb Beach stood out for its cleanliness, likely due to its flat and wide topography, which limits waste accumulation. Sayan also learned that Arnala Beach is recognized as one of the cleanest beaches in Maharashtra.
This experience highlighted a significant challenge: the lack of unified government responsibility. Oceans fall under municipal jurisdiction, beachside trees under the Forest Department, and roads and nearby areas under the Panchayat, leading to fragmented management and a lack of accountability. Each body operates independently, with little support for cohesive action. Furthermore, the scarcity of proper waste disposal infrastructure compounds the issue, as evident at Vasai Beach, where waste management and enforcement fall short. The visits to other beaches demonstrated the disparity in cleanliness levels, underscoring the urgent need for better coordination among government bodies and improved waste management solutions.
