On December 3, 2021, POP Movement Venezuela announced the winners of the first “Feed your conscience” contest. This contest was launched on September 22, 2021, as part of the “School Education for Sustainable Development” program. The contest was developed to promote the importance of good child nutrition in eight schools and witnessed the participation of 4,200 students from primary and high-school levels across three states – Barquisimeto, Lara state, Puerto Ayacucho, Amazonas state, and Valencia, Carabobo State – in Venezuela. As part of the contest, a range of activities were designed to elicit the interest of children from different grades in both primary and high-school levels.

The contest took place between two major dates: World Food Day, which is celebrated every year on October 16, coinciding with the anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which in 2021 celebrates 75 years since its founding; and Food Day, which is celebrated in Venezuela on November 18 every year, since the National Institute of Nutrition (INN) was created in 1949, by presidential decree of Rómulo Gallegos, as a response to the serious nutritional problem that a large part of the Venezuelan population was experiencing. In this regard, the schools participating in the contest were asked to declare the days between October 16 and November 18, as the Month of Nutrition. Through this, the teachers promoted the following among the students:

  1. Reading about pertinent topics to deepen the importance of well-being and nourishment, the plight of people living in poverty, the causes of inequality in economic and social development, and global food imbalances.
  2. Learning about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a focus on SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 12 (Responsible Production and Consumption) and their targets.
  3. Identifying the foods students consume daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Subsequently, to identify the foods that allow for the healthy growth and development of children and adolescents.

The jury consisted of Dr. Isabel Abreu de Ferri (Pediatrician), Dr. Silvia Rodríguez (Pediatrics, with a Master's Degree in Nutrition), Dr. Maryelin L Duno Ruiz (Childcare and Pediatrics, with a Master's Degree in Nutrition), Licda. Maria Grazia D'Antico (Licentiate in Psychology, Clinical Mention Master's Degree in Applied Psychology), and Licda. Geraldine Angulo Blanco (Clinical Psychologist. Specialist in Eating Disorder).

The following schools participated in the contest: U.E. Colegio Batalla de la Victoria, Barquisimeto, Lara State; U.E. Colegio Ciencia y Tecnología Orinoco, Puerto Ayacucho, Amazonas; U.E. Colegio Santa Rosa, Valencia, Carabobo State; I.D.E.A. Institute of Active Education, Valencia, Carabobo State; Juan XXIII Educational Institute, Valencia, Carabobo State; U.E.
