Agroecological Crop Planting of Cassava and Climate Education in School: Sierra Leone

POP Youth Mentor and Ambassador for Sierra Leone, Mark Sara Koroma trained school students from Jan 16, 2023-Feb 21, 2023 on agro ecological crop planting of Cassava and Climate Education to tackle food insecurity and climate resilience. Martha Campbell, Co-Founder and Programs Director, Street Youth Connection Sierra Leone, addressed the school authorities and students in a bid to tackle climate change, food insecurity and complement the Government of Sierra Leone in their school feeding program to make it sustainable. POP Initiative Sierra Leone embarked on training school students on agro ecological crop planting of Cassava in 12 established School Gardens in Bombali District. This event lasts for four weeks and 1,200 participants were directly benefited and about 2,000 community members including teachers would indirectly benefit from it.
Objective/motive of the activity or event
The main objective is to train school students on the process and procedures involved in agroecological planting and cultivation of crops in their various school gardens.
Outcomes
Over 1,200 school students from 12 schools were educated on agroecological crop cultivation and climate resilience
Twelve beneficiary schools now have one acre each, of cassava farm established POP Sierra Leone Initiative
More than 5,000 indirect beneficiaries ranging from teachers, community people and stakeholders
Way forward
There is need for more support for tools and protective gears for pupils
