2023 International Forest Day
March 17, 2023
Activity 5
On March 17, 2023, a remarkable event was organized by Nyaradzo funeral policy in collaboration with various stakeholders including Manica Youth Assembly, Environment buddies, Diamond FM, and Forestry Commission. The event took place at the Miracle Centre United Methodist Church in Dangamvura, Zimbabwe.
The primary objective of the event was to raise awareness about the importance of trees and combating climate change for the overall development of the country. It served as an opportunity for different stakeholders to share their knowledge and educate the community on the significance of trees. The International Tree Planting Day served as a platform for discussions surrounding climate change and its impact on our environment.
During the event, several observations were made. The United Methodist Church made a commitment to maintain the Dangamvura mountain, aiming to reduce the occurrence of natural disasters. Other stakeholders also took the initiative to educate the community about the importance of tree planting and the adverse effects of climate change.
However, some emerging issues were identified. Concerns were raised regarding the cutting down of trees and ploughing in the mountains, which could potentially lead to natural disasters such as landslides. Members of the Methodist church expressed fear about the consequences of these activities. Additionally, it was noted that young people, particularly the youth, should be actively involved in such events as they hold the future of tomorrow. Residents also voiced their preference for indigenous trees over exotic ones. Advocacy efforts with the government and community members were deemed necessary to address these issues. Climate change resulting from deforestation was another growing concern.
The event had a profound impact on the participants, increasing their understanding of the issues discussed during the International Forest Day. The responsibilities to combat climate change were not solely placed on the stakeholders but extended to the churches, emphasizing the importance of tree planting and environmental care. Participants recognized the significance of involving the community in tree planting and environmental conservation efforts.
Approximately 40 individuals attended the event, including church leaders, members of the business community, youth, and like-minded organizations. Moving forward, it was suggested that more educational initiatives be conducted in collaboration with churches, given their extensive reach and influence. Churches were encouraged to continue their active participation in promoting global goals and actively engage in tree planting and cleanup activities.
The Tree Planting Day in Dangamvura served as a significant step towards addressing climate change and fostering a sustainable environment. Through collective efforts and ongoing engagement, the community aims to create a better future for generations to come.
