The POP Movement at the 17th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, Yucatán, Mexico

On September 19- 22, 2019, the POP Movement participated at the 17th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, in Mérida, Mexico. The POP Movement was represented by POP Youth Mentor, Vanessa Anahí Hernández Vázquez of the University of Guadalajara, along with POP Youth Leaders Jesús Humberto Fernández Rodríguez of the State University of Sonora, Fernando Castro Bojorquez, and Saul Ernesto Gerardo López of the Universidad de Occidente on Los Mochis, Sinaloa.
With an aim to foster world peace by addressing pertinent global issues, the Summit saw the participation of students, non-governmental organizations, government representatives, business leaders, scientists and experts from multiple disciplines who sought to work together on building a better and peaceful society. Through programs, panel discussions and workshops, extensive dialogue ensued on overcoming impactful social, political and socio-personal issues that hinders the realization of peace at various spheres in global society. Climate action, as one of the influential components of world peace was also duly addressed in the three days.
For the young POP leaders, the high-level event was a unique opportunity to connect with great personalities, be exposed to diverse cultures, and draw leanings and inspiration from the experiences and perceptions of activists and pioneers from different fields. Leymah Gbowee, Liberian peace activist, Tawakkol Karman, Yemeni journalist, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Former President of Liberia, Lech Wałęsa, Former President of Poland, Juan Manuel Santos, Former President of Colombia were some of the many Nobel Peace Laureates who graced the Summit.
