As part of the August Special Tribute to Dr. R.K. Pachauri, Kingsley Osajie, POP Initiative Mentor from Nigeria, turned a simple act of planting into a meaningful lesson on sustainability for children in his local community in Obiaruku, Delta State, Nigeria.

On 1 August 2026, Kingsley engaged children between the ages of 4 and 12 years in a pineapple planting activity focused on the importance of responsible consumption and sustainable living, contributing to SDGs 2, 3, and 12. Sixteen pineapple stocks were purchased for the activity, creating an opportunity for children to learn that our relationship with food does not have to end when we consume it.

The activity encouraged the children to rethink a familiar habit: instead of simply consuming fruits and discarding what remains, we can return what nature gives us back to the Earth through planting. This simple message introduced the young participants to the idea of circularity, care for nature, and responsible consumption in a way that was practical, joyful, and easy to understand.

Twelve children from the community enthusiastically participated in the planting activity alongside Kingsley. Through their hands-on involvement, the children were able to experience sustainability not as an abstract concept, but as something they could practice themselves.

The activity beautifully reflected the spirit of Dr. R.K. Pachauri’s vision of empowering young people through awareness, participation, and action. By helping children connect everyday choices with environmental responsibility, Kingsley demonstrated how meaningful climate and sustainability education can begin with the simplest of actions.

Sometimes, carrying a legacy forward does not require grand gestures. It begins with planting a seed, nurturing curiosity, and helping the next generation understand that they too have a role to play in caring for our planet.
