“Greening Higher Education” During Climate Week in New York

During Climate Week in New York, UNESCO hosted an insightful event titled “Greening Higher Education” in collaboration with Green Mentors. The panel discussion, held before an audience of around 200 attendees, explored how higher education institutions could integrate sustainable practices across four key pillars: teaching and learning, science and technology innovation (STI), community and industry engagements, and a holistic institutional approach. The session featured engaging discussions with leading voices in the field, offering valuable perspectives on advancing sustainability within higher education.
Dr. Ash Pachauri presented for 8 minutes on “Greening Skills and Jobs,” addressing how universities could develop programs to equip students with the necessary green skills for future employment. He explored emerging fields and opportunities in the green job market, offering insights into how educational institutions could tailor their curricula to meet these growing demands.
Additionally, Dr. Norma spoke for 8 minutes on “Greening Teaching Training and Curriculum,” focusing on how teacher training institutions could equip both in-service and pre-service educators with essential green knowledge and tools. She highlighted successful examples of experiential and interdisciplinary approaches to teaching sustainability, emphasizing the importance of preparing educators to lead in a sustainable future.
This event provided an exciting opportunity to engage with experts and explore actionable strategies for greening higher education, ensuring that students and educators alike are prepared for the challenges of tomorrow’s sustainable world.
