Youth CAN: Developing Youth Leadership for Climate Action Now, a Latin America Dialogue

On 22nd April, 2020, as a part of the Latin American dialogue and marking 50 years of Earth Day and the POP Movement’s 4th Birthday, a virtual conference was held which discussed the role of education for training citizens in order to promote climate action.

The POP Movement was started by Lt. Dr. R.K. Pachauri (Former Chair, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 2002-2015) in 2016. He initiated the movement because he believed that today’s youth, when inspired by knowledge, can change the future through climate action and awareness generation.

The first Latin American Dialogue titled - “Developing Youth Leadership for Climate Action” was held in the presence of the former President of Ecuador Dr. Rosalía Arteaga Serrano, who reaffirmed the role of education as a transversal axis for the comprehensive training of citizens. The dialogue was marked by a presence of 55 participants, belonging to six Latin American countries: Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, Colombia, and Panama.

The young participants of the dialogue presented various climate action projects which have been carried out in their countries of origin. Some of the topics addressed during the dialogue were - environmental education, eco-ambulance, CO2 reduction strategies, monitoring of environmental projects, creating gardens from your home and exchanging plastic bottles for books, among others. The dialogue ended with the decision to implement next steps together with Fundación Fidal a youth and education focused not-for-profit founded by the former President of Ecuador herself, H.E., Dr. Rosalía Arteaga Serrano. It emerged from the dialogue that the partnership of POP Movement and Fundación Fidal will go a long way in implementing climate action in the Latin American region.
