Women ecological agriculture trainings: Malawi

November 2, 2022 - November 4, 2022

We are probably less than a month towards the rain season in Malawi, another very crucial period when some climate elements are bold. This week, a team from Malawi is continuing the project they started in July 2022, namely, women and ecological agriculture in one of the villages in my  community. Gender gap in Malawi remains a challenge in the climate space. Eighty percent of full-time farmers in Malawi are women. A woman carries out 70% of agricultural tasks in the homestead. However, women have access to climate and eco-agriculture information. To the contrary,  men who happen to have an upper access to climate and agriculture information are committed to non-agriculture tasks. In this way climate and natural resources are wasting due to unsustainable agriculture  practices fueled by gender mechanisms.

Consolidating women ecological agriculture education can be one of the solutions to curbing this  problem. In this report is, mounting of an organic agriculture demonstration garden, a methodology they are using to train Kambulaje women farmers clubs. Two activities were carried out, (1) organic manure  making and (2) demonstration garden plot layout.

Place:Kambulaje Village, Machinga, Malawi
Stakeholders involved: [1] Traditional chiefs  [2] Faith leaders  [3] Women farmer clubs
Partners involved: Access agriculture
Target group: Women (15-60 years old)
Number of participants: 1 male, 26 female; 27 in total
Direct impacted population: 27  Indirect impacted population: 200

Objectives attained:

  • Bridging the gender gap in climate and agriculture spaces.
  • Helping the women farmers understand organic and sustainable agriculture practices that also nurture the environment.
  • Civic educating the general communities through the demonstration gardens.

The journey continues to be interesting with new faces boarding in, new learning, and  experiences. We will continue to find the fun inside it as we attract the much-needed change. The future is still green as long as we are trying.
