Shenzhen – January 16, 2019

January 16, 2019

“The Chief Mentor gave a video keynote address at an event organized by the “international Mayors Communications Center” in Shenzhen. on January 16, 2019. The talk covered the need for climate change action to be seen as a “collective action” problem. This is similar to actions which characterize human exploitation of the global commons. Since population growth which till the beginning of the 20th century was moderate and consumption patterns which in pre-industrial periods were generally stable, there was a balance which did not lead to what is described as the “tragedy of the commons”. But now with a rapid increase in global consumption in the industrial age, carbon dioxide concentration levels which were 280 parts per million (ppm) in pre-industrial periods are now well in excess of 400 ppm. And the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has brought out a special report recently to show the huge risks from an average temperature exceeding 1.5 degrees C by the end of the century. This requires the youth of the world to take grassroots, collective action, particularly since it is their future which is at stake. This is where the POP Movement must quickly become a major global movement for mitigation and adaptation on climate change for ensuring limits to the risks from climate change impacts and sustainability of human actions in the future. ”
