Grafting mango seedlings: Malawi

November 24, 2022

One beauty of the climate space is that it has a job for everyone! While the rest of the world is  worried of rising unemployment rates, here is a space with an open check.  The week of November 24, 2022, dwells on recent activity with the Therere Fruit Farmers Club. A group of five farmers who found their motivation to start fruit seedlings nursery raising. Five months  ago, they were together setting up the preliminary nursery activities that included fencing, tube  filling, and seed selection. Today, the nursery is now grown and it is time for grafting. Grafting is  a technical propagation operation on young tree seedlings to among others, allow a quick productivity of the fruit trees. Apart from that, economically, grafted seedlings fetch a  handsome price on the market giving our farmers a ‘rich-green’ livelihood. This is where my  role was this time. Therefore, this week, the report captured recent activity involving the practical training of these farmers on grafting in their tree nursery.

Place: Machiyinga Village, Machinga, Malawi
Stakeholders involved: Therere farmer organization
Partners involved: Komwa and Sons agri-business
Direct impacted population: 1 female, 4 male; 5 in total
Indirect impacted population: 200

Objectives attained:

  • Assisted the farmers on steps towards successful Grafting
  • Successfully grafted 179 mango seedlings out of 5,000 seedlings in the  nursery.
Raised mango seedlings ready for grafting operation
A fast learner farmer, doing more than he is taught: Mango Grafting

Conclusion

While we are thinking of climate actions, it would also be great to consider climate jobs.  Depleted jobs are a threat to the planet, natural resources, climate and mankind. Consolidating small farmers initiatives like these provides an alternative ‘green’ livelihood and that becomes a  straight win to climate struggle.
