Events in the Chiapas

February 26, 2019

The POP Movement conducted four important activities in Tuxtla Gutiérrez  on Feb 26 2019.  In the morning, the POP Movement addressed a group of close to 200 students from several schools and universities in the Chiapas, including Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas, Tecnologico de Tuxtla Gutiérrez, and Preparatoria 2 de Tuxtla Gutiérrez and government officials, private sector experts, and academics at the Congreso Del Estado de Chiapas in Tuxtla Gutiérrez.

Following a 2 hour interactive session in the morning, which concluded with a commitment by Dip. Marcelo Toledo Cruz, President of Political Coordination to plant 800,000 trees in the Chiapas this year, the POP Movement had a one-to-one meeting with the President of the Congress of the Chiapas, Dip Rosa Elizabeth Banilla Hidalgo who welcomed the POP Movement to the state and offered to support a series of activities to Protect Our Planet throughout the state, including a launch of the Movement with a POP Festival in May 2019.

Subsequent to the exclusive meeting with the Congress President Dip Rosa Elizabeth Banilla Hidalgo, the POP Movement joined the President who presided over a meeting of Congressmen and Congress women from across the state.  The meeting convening 150 federal, state, and municipal leaders from every region of the state to discuss climate action was a milestone and historic first-of-its-kind in the Chiapas.  The POP Movement was asked to make a keynote address, following which Congressmen and women spoke, raised issues, and voiced solutions.  The outcomes of the meeting were 3-fold.  1) The Congress has formed a POP group to lead climate action in each of their regions; 2) The Congress-led POP group will meet regularly to follow up on progress.  Their first meeting is scheduled in the first week of March; and 3) The Congress pledged support for the POP Movement, its activities, and a festival in May 2019. The Governor’s office made note of the outcomes of the Congressional deliberations and pledged his support to the POP Movement in the Chiapas.

Following the 2 hour engagement with the Congress, the President Dip Rosa Elizabeth Banilla Hidalgo invited the POP Movement to the studios of Channel 10 to promote its partnership and announce its plan of activities especially the upcoming POP Festival scheduled in May, 2019.

The events of February 26, 2019 were live streamed online and through the Congress’ dedicated TV channel.
