Climate education session with non-schooling youth: Malawi
December 3, 2022
School drop-out rates among the youth is still a big problem in most rural parts of Malawi. Only 34% of primary school graduates continue to secondary education. While this is a different topic with a different story. However, the point is that climate activists in Malawi should stop sticking to the schools only, much as we commend their great work but they should be reminded that they are only putting on a maximum of 34%. Therefore, this week’s activity targeted this majority; the non-school going youth. Climate literacy is for all. Understanding the audience when executing your duties as a climate activist is very important. Different audiences need different approaches, and this is why this session was isolated.
Place: Jonafani Village, Machinga, Malawi
Stakeholders involved: Limera Youth Organization
Partners involved: Access Agriculture
Direct impacted population: 29 females, 41 males Indirect impacted population: 200
Objectives attained:
- Evangelized climate information to the difficult to reach population; the non-schooling youth.
- Reinforced climate actions in the rural communities.
Conclusion
Unequal access to information remains a challenge in climate information absorption. It is, therefore, very important to consider diverse methodologies in order to make sure that everyone understands the emergency we are in, because it has a business with everyone.
