Building Tree Nursery Skills for a Greener Future

Building Tree Nursery Skills for a Greener Future

From 16 to 21 May 2026, Sibonile Myambo led a tree species knowledge and nursery skills management workshop aimed at strengthening the capacity of preschool teachers to introduce practical environmental learning among young children.

The workshop brought together 8 preschool teachers for training on tree planting, nursery management and maintenance, with the wider programme expected to benefit more than 300 learners through practical nursery activities. The training also encouraged participating preschools to become more actively involved in environmental initiatives, including tree planting at their own sites. By developing these skills at the school level, the initiative aims to help communities build greater resilience to environmental challenges such as droughts, flooding and heat waves.

The activity also contributed to strengthening the POP Movement community structure through awareness, networking, partnerships, capacity building and environmental advocacy. With limited funding, the workshop was supported through a partnership with the Chimanimani Tourism Association, which provided food and refreshments for participants. The training was followed by the development of an action plan to guide the next stages of the initiative.

Aligned with SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), the activity demonstrated how equipping educators with practical environmental skills can create a wider ripple effect among young learners and their communities.
