POP Movement celebrates its 4th Birthday: Reminiscing and Remembering Dr. R.K. Pachauri

On April 22, 2020, the POP family from around the world joined together for a virtual meet up to talk about the journey of the POP Movement and celebrated its birthday. Dr. Norma Patricia Muñoz Sevilla, POP Honorary Distinguished Mentor, highlighted how she first met Lt. Dr. Pachauri in a conference hosted by Instituto Politécnico Nacional. As a follow up to the conference Dr. Norma became a key member of the POP Movement.
Lic. Jose Ernesto Bermejo, COEO Consultores SC and Treasurer, POP Movement, Mexico, recalled how the POP Movement was initiated from Coyoacán, Mexico. He highlighted the urgent need for funding for media outreach and youth involvement, mobilization, and NGO-based partnerships in the future. Eleonora Isunza, Co-Founder of Cinema Planeta, an International Environmental Film Festival of México, termed late Dr. Pachauri as – “A Machine of Ideas” with huge memory and grit and persistence for sustained hard work. She brought to the table the point that – the POP Movement is a platform of ideas and tools for the future of the youth. Cinema Planeta which is a partner of the POP Movement needs to continue this collaboration in future.
Dr. Antonio Fernando Sarmiento Galán, who is a member of the Instituto de Matmáticas of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and International Advisory Board Member, POP Movement, mentioned that Dr. Pachauri has already created a plan and work for the POP Movement’s future. He mentioned that Dr. Pachauri always wanted to make a film on the Swedish scientist who established the association between rising temperatures of the planet Earth due to growing emissions from human activities. Dr. Galán reiterated that the POP Movement can fulfil the wish of completion of that film as a tribute to Late Dr. Pachauri. He proposed that the POP Movement may create a fund to mobilize resources to complete this film. Dr. Muñoz highlighted the importance of future collaborative work to change the behavior of humans on the planet. The celebration of the birthday concluded with different anecdotes by the POP family. Dr. Galán concluded by saying – “It’s finally nature that has had to awaken us to make us understand that a change in required”.
