March 5, 2020
The Second Edition of the World Sustainable Development Forum (WSDF) was hosted by the State Government of Durango in collaboration with World Sustainable Development Forum and Protect Our Planet Movement and was held in Durango, México from March 5-7, 2020. The three-day event in Durango was charged with back-to-back panel discussions under the overarching theme of “Action to Limit Warming to 1.5°C”. Honorable Governor of Durango, who is the host patron of WSDF hosted the high-level transnational multi-generational event on behalf of the State Government of Durango, México, signifying the region’s inclination towards a more conscious and sustainable society. The Foreign Affairs Minister of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon and Environment Minister of Mexico, Víctor Manuel Toledo Manzur joined José Rosas Aispuro Torres, Constitutional Governor of Durango to inaugurate the event.
Having the ability to impact every stakeholder in society, young people have been influencing those around their spheres including parents, teachers, and communities to take transformative action. By collectivizing these individual efforts in a ground-up global movement, youth can really engage and steer society as a whole towards an environmentally desirable progress. According to Dr. Ash Pachauri, Senior Mentor of the POP Movement, “It is essential to catalyze youth to take action to urgently limit global warming to below 1.5 degrees Celsius and this action needs to be inspired by knowledge”. WSDF 2020 had a separate youth-centric session called YOUTHQUAKE and deliberations witnessed participation from youth leaders from Africa, Americas and Asia and from youth movements such as Fridays For Future and POP Movement.
