Strike for Climate and for Chile

Demanding a 2020 climate agenda for the Chilean town that has been vulnerable to the extreme effects of climate change, the Strike for Climate and for Chile was organized on December 6, 2019, in Independence Park, a historic center in the city of Santo Domingo, Chile. With participation from social, trade, youth, climate, and environmental organizations, the strike consisted of a series of activities including a concert, ballet performance of “Butacada de Villa Mella” with interpretations on climate change, and the exhibition of posters with slogans on climate change calling for an environmental agenda. The event also saw the participation of notable individuals like Sheila Cáceres from Fridays For Future, Dominican Republic, Héctor Turbí from the National Committee to Combat Climate Change (CNLCC) and others. Professor Hugo Gerter, National Director of the College of Teachers and leader of the Bureau of the Social Unit of Chile, inaugurated the event.

The strike culminated with the reading of a manifesto demanding climate agenda for Chile by Enrique de León from CNLCC, Euren Cuevas from the Institute of Lawyers for the Protection of the Environment (INSAPROMA) and Luis Calvajar from the Environmental Commission of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD). The event was widely published in the press and other media platforms.
