Youth Call for Greater Role in Climate Adaptation Efforts

October 16, 2025

Young people in Lilongwe, Malawi, are calling for greater inclusion in climate adaptation decision-making, emphasizing that they are among the most affected by environmental degradation. The call was made during the Youth Climate Adaptation Action Day, organized by Mthunzi Trust at Mkwichi Secondary School with support from the Global Center on Adaptation.

Students from Maya Private Secondary School described the event as an eye-opening experience that empowered them to take part in local climate initiatives and influence policy decisions.

Mthunzi Trust CEO, Symon Satiele, highlighted that young people face severe climate-related challenges such as droughts and floods that disrupt livelihoods and education. He stressed that “the future of climate resilience depends on how well we prepare and empower young people.”

Similarly, Green Children Organisation representative Simon Kalua underscored the need for youth inclusion in national policy-making, stating that “young people are not just victims of climate change but active players shaping a sustainable future.

Held under the theme “Engaging Youth in Nationally Determined Contributions and Adaptation Plans,” the event formed part of a global initiative to empower youth to lead climate adaptation actions, supported by Sida’s Civil Society Organisation Capacity Strengthening Programme implemented by Save the Children in partnership with Mthunzi Trust.
