On September 18, 2023, during New York Climate Week 2023, esteemed environmental experts and POP mentors Dr. Norma Muñoz, Dr. Saroj Pachauri, and Dr. Ash Pachauri gathered with the president and CEO of AltaSea, Terry Tamminen, to discuss the pivotal role of marine biodiversity in preserving the planet’s ecological balance.

Delving into the significance of ocean conservation, the experts changed ideas on sargassum and the recent research study on its massive arrival to the coasts of Quintana Roo, Mexico, led by the Interdisciplinary Center for Research and Studies on Environment and Development (CIIEMAD) of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), in collaboration with the POP Movement.

Attendees reiterated the phrase “no blue, no green,” underscoring the important relationship between the health of the oceans and the sustainability of terrestrial ecosystems beyond the social, economical, and political implications. Their collective concern highlighted the urgency of addressing environmental challenges to ensure a sustainable future for the planet.
