From April 7 to April 20, 2022, U.E. YMCA Don Teodoro Gubaira, a private school in Valencia, Carabobo State, Venezuela, organized a Science Fair for primary school students from first to sixth grade, in partnership with POP Venezuela. As part of POP Venezuela’s “Education for Sustainable Development” program, this year’s fair was dedicated to the 7Rs of sustainability: Reject, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Resist, Repair, and Reincorporate. It aimed to promote more responsible and sustainable lifestyle habits, reduce urban waste, and minimize environmental degradation through a circular economy.

Following educational sessions, the themes “recycle at home”, “recycling plants”, “recycling fabrics”, “energy recycling”, “plastic recycling” and “food recycling” were assigned to students from first grade to sixth grade, respectively. Within this, the children presented the theme of the 7Rs in unique and colorful forms, including stories, songs, statements, and costumes made with reused materials such as food packaging.

The event saw the engagement of 600 students, 26 teachers, and 400 parents who were sensitized about the 7Rs of sustainability and were motivated to change their attitudes and behaviors to limit pollution in the state. The school coordinators who supported this event included Ms. Milagros Polo, Director; Mr. Elias Polo, Administrative Director; Ms. Nayleth Yépez, Area Advisor; and other teachers. Through POP Venezuela’s “Education for Sustainable Development” program, the school will incorporate environmental education into their curriculum on a permanent basis and, furthermore, incorporate environmental content into the future science fairs.
