September 19, 2020

Youth-Led-Ocean-Action-and-Advocacy-Workshop-17-09-2020

The POP Ocean Initiative, which was launched during the “Perils of Sea Level Rise” session at the Second World Sustainable Development Forum 2020, serves as an innovative new model International Ocean Cleanup Day and Launch of the Youth-Led Ocean Action and Advocacy Workshop for ocean action to stimulate youth-led marine conservation efforts through education and mentorship. The initiative aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).  As part of POP Ocean’s effort to build capacities of young ocean advocates, it will launch the Youth-Led Ocean Action and Advocacy Workshop on September 19, 2020, which also marks International Ocean Cleanup Day.

Youth-Led Ocean Action and Advocacy Workshop: The training workshop will consist of a series of 8 peer-led sessions delivered over 4 weeks, for a select 25 participants who are aspiring ocean advocates. Each session, designed by and for youth, will be implemented virtually involving young resource persons who are knowledge experts and leaders in advocacy. The objective of the workshop is to build capacities of young people to create and implement projects and solutions in the field of ocean conservation. Serving as a platform for knowledge sharing, capacity building and networking, the sessions will address the key aspects involved in the process of actualization of youth-led projects, including effective communication, problem solving and leadership.

To commemorate this initiative, POP Ocean will organize a two-hour event on September 19, 2020, marking International Coastal Cleanup Day. This event seeks to bring together experts from different backgrounds to touch on the need for marine conservation, discuss the projected risks and consequences and explore the actions possible to prevent/address a crisis of this magnitude.
